John Hultberg rose to prominence "in the 1950's with powerful landscapes, fractured into slabs under ominous horizons; multiplicities of bizarre, huddled shapes; and dense, semiabstract urban wastelands dappled with harsh brilliance and vague human touches. Their air of mystery and forceful use of color earned him awards at exhibitions that began in the 1950's and continued for five decades."-N...

"Throughout my career I have developed paintings in series. One painting will often suggest alternatives that can be followed and exploited. Ideas can spread like branches of a tree. Although I am most interested in the process of painting, I often use a computer to revisit earlier states of a painting and to try out color or form changes."-Roy Nicholson

    Artists would do themselves a great service if they just did their art and disabused themselves of any hope of selling it because most artists will never sell much. There must be other ways to support art than sales of art.

    I’ve been reading up on this show from a MoMA published book from way back when lots of the Abstract Expressionists eventually had there work shown in Europe as a result of this event from what I read. But this really gives it perspective from those who presented and to know that it wasn’t such an easy label and it’s the museums that get to put the final stamp on it all not so much the artists.

    Screen printing came from China. Not America

    • @idavidgraficks123
      @idavidgraficks123 9 месяцев назад

      Nope, screen printing INVOLVES A SCREEN. China had stencils the floating ties. China didn't pass ink through a screen.

    • @Slusho
      @Slusho 9 месяцев назад

      False, Its origins can be traced back to China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). This early form of printing involved using a fine mesh (originally made of silk, hence the name 'silk screen') to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. This technique was later adopted and further developed in other Asian countries like Japan, where it was used for printing textiles and paper. The method didn't gain significant popularity in Europe until silk mesh became more available from the East, particularly in the 18th century. The modern form of screen printing, with more sophisticated processes and materials, developed further in the early 20th century. It became particularly popular in the artistic community, with artists and graphic designers embracing the technique for its versatility and unique visual results. This period saw the evolution of screen printing from a largely industrial technique to an important artistic medium.

    Cramer once argued that any "excitement " around Basquiat's work was merely "a bow to the less fortunate" (ie: blacks), & that Basquiat's contribution to Art was "so minuscule as to be considered "nil" Apart from his racism, can't imagine being more

      A.X. Kramer was a pompous man. Unfortunately there were few critic in art history who weren't failed artists while becoming self promoting critics.

    I studied with Joe at Parsons School of Design in the late 70's and I have to say that he was a great and generous instructor and included me in his circle at the Cedar Tavern. It was a living history lesson and as he mentions in his own recollections of earlier times at the Cedar, I learned a great deal more about art and life over a beer at the Cedar Tavern than just about anywhere else.

    "Maybe this stuff deserves a second look ...?' Certainly. A fascinating series of videos that demonstrate the New York School of the 40s and 50s was artistically broader than the selective gaze of the dominant critical force of that time, Greenburg, would have us believe. That said, Dore Ashton's book The New York School remains the best guide I know that reflects the diversity of artistic expression that others have chosen to past over.
